Kumbhalgarh Fort, almost unconquerable is a legendary fortress situated within the westerly range of Aravali Hills. It is declared as World Heritage Site. It is the most important fort in Mewar after Chittorgarh. Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the legendary ruler and warrior of Mewar.
With a wall over 38 km long, the fort is the second largest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China and the second largest fort in Rajasthan after Chittorgarh Fort. It is encircled by high mountain peaks of Aravali and the fort itself lies on the top most ridges at a height of 1914 meters above sea level.
The fort is spread over the length of 36 kms surrounded by an enormous thick wall which is approximately 15 kms long. This wall runs on the nearby hillocks of the Aravali range. The wall is an excellent example of architecture that it is intact and in good condition from eras.
This wall is constructed on the ups and downs and twisted at distances through cliffs and valleys. The wall also walks through the forest area which is popularly known as Kumbhalgarh National Park.
This national park is house of many endangered species which includes panthers, leopards, Hyena, Toddy cats, Wolf, Chausinga, Neelgai, Sambhars, Crocodiles, Grey Jungle fowl, Peacocks, Wild boars, Beers etc.
The fort is protected by seven massive gates and huge watch towers. This strong architecture makes the fort unbeatable till date. The legend is that the wall of fort is broad enough to walk eight horses side by side.
The fort is also famous for the beautiful palace crowned on the top of the fort. The palace is known as Badal Mahal or the palace of cloud. The palace is well decorated with beautiful rooms colored in a combination of green, turquoise and white giving a bright contrast to the fort.
This palace gives a feel of wandering in the clouds. It also offers a spectacular view of nearby surroundings. There are more than 360 temples built in house in which includes both Jain temples and Hindu temples. Among all, Shiva temple is the worth to visit which comprises of huge Shivalinga. The fort also presents a mesmerizing bird’s eye view of the surroundings. The width of wall varies from 15 to 25 feet.
Not only the fort but the way to the fort is also worth to travel. On your way to the destination, the road offers a zigzag ride sometimes deep and sometimes uphill throughout the dense but lush green forest.
The fort is open to the public for day and night where it also set alight in the night for some time exhibiting a mesmerizing view of the beauty of the palace.
How to reach
Kumbhalgarh Fort is easily reached by taking either regular buses or hiring a Udaipur Taxi Services. The fort is easily accessible and is just about 60Kms away from the city of Udaipur. The nearest airport is in Udaipur at 98 kms.
